Louise's Review: A Wedding in Italy by Tilly Tennant

Reviewed by Louise Wykes

Sun, spaghetti and sparkling prosecco. When it comes to finding love, there’s no place like Rome…

Kate is living the dream with her gorgeous boyfriend Alessandro in his native city, but the reality is sometimes a little less romantic than she’d hoped. Every day in her new home is a fight against leaking pipes, her cantankerous landlord and her less-than-perfect grasp of the Italian lingo.

All around her there is talk of weddings, but when a secret from her past is thrust out into the open, Kate must fight to prove to Alessandro’s Mamma – and the rest of his formidable family – that she truly is Italian marriage material.

With the women in Alessandro’s life on a mission to break them apart, the cracks begin to show and Kate starts to question if Alessandro really is the man of her dreams. Can love and the city of romance conquer all, or is that just a fairy-tale?

After devouring and adoring the first book in this series, Rome Is Where the Heart Is, I was more than excited to revisit the glorious city of Rome to re-join Kate and get updated with her story so far.

Life in Rome is certainly not as Kate had actually envisaged, her flat needs dozens of repairs, she has no job and Alessandro’s family seem determined to scupper her romance with Alessandro by any means necessary.  Also Kate is finding it hard to try and master a new language especially whenever the Italians she meets are determined to try out their English on her!!

I loved revisiting Kate and it was wonderful to see the reality behind the romantic ideal of cutting off personal and emotional ties in one country and starting a new life and a new romance in a country that is extremely different even if it is the beautiful city of Rome.

I felt through the writing a close, personal connection with Kate and it’s Tilly’s talent for writing that really captures the essence of a person that allows the reader to feel such a strong emotional connection with the main character so that the reader feels truly invested in the story.

Usually second books don’t live up to the standards of the first in a series but I think this one surpasses it.  There is everything you could want from a wonderfully sweet love story: comedy, drama, sadness and just a hint of a mystery that keeps the reader turning the pages.

I felt that this could be the last book in this series but ever hopeful that Tilly will one day revisit these wonderful characters and places that I have come to know and love.
