Books Read: Linda Green - The Marriage Mender

Alison is a marriage mender. Her job is to help couples who fear they have reached the end of the line. But the trouble with spending your time sorting out other people's problems is that you tend to take your eye off your own.

Even when her husband's ex Lydia arrives on the doorstep demanding to see her son, Alison thinks she can handle it.

But what Alison doesn't realise is that Lydia is the one person who has the ability to destroy their happy family. And sometimes the cracks can run so deep that even a marriage mender can't repair them.

Alison is good at her job helping couples to resolve issues in their relationships but her experience doesn't seem to help when the re-emergence of her partner's ex causes no end of drama and threatens everything she holds dear, her family.

This was an interesting read about troubled relationships, not just Alison's own with husband Chris.  At first I did wonder why we were seeing snippets of counselling sessions with couples rather than just being told their story but as one particular story unfolded the connection soon became clear.

At the end of each chapter were light-hearted snippets which I assume were notes from therapy sessions, not the couples in the stories, some of which were very funny and others somewhat bizarre.  Some might not like these additions but I didn't mind them at all.

Both Alison and Chris were great characters and it was clear that they did both love each other even when they were struggling to communicate with one another so I was willing them to overcome all the obstacles in their way to work things out.  But even in the darkest moments you could rely on their daughter Matilda to bring a little relief although it was also quite sad at times to read her pain at events that were going on around her that she didn't really understand.

My only minor niggle in what was otherwise an enjoyable read was the ending,  I would have liked to have read a little more to see how things progressed...

I'd like to thank Lauren at Quercus Books for sending me a copy of this book to review
