Anita is dealing with a bad family situation and unfortunately she brings her problems to work. Mia is torn between sympathy for her and anger at her self-serving attitudes.
Meanwhile Mia's friend Carla needs her wholehearted approval when she decides to have a boob job to please her boyfriend approval Mia is not able to give. Suddenly their rock-solid friendship seems more like quicksand.
To add to Mia's tensions, her love life is shaky too. When she first met Paul the Builder it was love at first sight or so she thought. But what does he think? She really can't tell as he blows hotter and colder than an Irish summer's day.
Then Mia takes on a client of Carla s, the millionaire Gordon McHale who reveals a secret about Carla that Mia would prefer not to know.
At a time when she needs to put the head down and get on with it, Mia is distracted by the disastrous events unfolding rapidly all around her. Suddenly she isn't so sure she knows herself at all or has any idea of what she wants from life.
I treated myself to a copy of When Love Takes Over as a Christmas present to myself in the Poolbeg pre-Christmas sale but due to my reviews backlog I haven't had a chance to read it before now.
Thirty-something Mia Doyle has a good job as an estate agent but she's still looking for Mr Right but thinks she may have found him in Paul the builder who's doing work for her friend, and landlord, Carla.
The story got off to an interesting start with Mia waking up after a night out not knowing where she is she got there... except that is that she's not in her own bed! So much to her relief, and embarassment, memories come flooding back to her about seducing Paul the previous night...
But just as things seem to be going right in her personal life, even if Paul does blow a bit hot and cold with her, everything else seems to be falling down around her ears... Her boss Dominic cuts back on her salary but then brings in his niece Anita who she'll have to work alongside to sell properties and share the commission, she finds out something about Carla's boyfriend and doesn't know how to tell her, and her mother expects her to move back home when her sister moves out in the new year which is last thing she wants to do!
One of the things I loved most about this book was that it was full of relateable characters, I've known my fair share of Dominic, Paul and James' and enjoyed similar nights out down my local pub as the girls did. Mia was definitely my favourite as I could really relate to her as everything she was experiencing about wanting to meet Mr Right and have a family was exactly how I felt when I was still in my thirties.
Full of humour and drama, I really enjoyed this debut novel from Caroline Grace-Cassidy and cannot wait to read more from her in the future to see how her writing style progresses. Her second book The Other Side of Wonderful is due to be published later this year.
