Books Read: Talli Roland - The No-Kids Club

At almost forty, Clare Donoghue is living child-free and loving it.

Then her boyfriend says he wants kids, breaking off their promising relationship. And it’s not just boyfriends: one by one, her formerly carefree friends are swallowed up in a nonstop cycle of play dates and baby groups. So Clare decides it’s time for people who don’t have children to band together. And so the No-Kids Club is born.

As the group comes together—Anna, who’s seeking something to jumpstart a stale marriage, and Poppy, desperate for a family but unable to conceive—Clare’s hoping to make the most of the childless life with her new friends.

Will the No-Kids Club be Clare’s route to happiness, or will the single life lose its sparkle?

Having recently split up from her boyfriend Edward due to her decision to not wanting to have children and her friends lives slowly all revolving around children and pregnancies, Clare decides that there must be like-minded people around who want to spend evenings out that didn't involve spending time with or talking about children.  But after looking for and not finding anything remotely suitable she decides to set up her own Facebook group The No-Kids Club.

Despite getting numerous messages the inaugrual meeting brings her into contact with two other women, Anna and Poppy who have completely different reasons for wanting to join the club.  Anna is happily married but, like Clare, she and husband Michael have chosen not to have children whereas Poppy is desperate to be a mum but has been unable to conceive so is wanting somewhere to socialise with others without seeing a constant reminder of children.

What I loved about this was that it was such an engaging read featuring three strong characters although I do have to confess that I wasn't quite as enamoured with Anna as I was with Clare and Poppy.  It was great to explore Clare's background and discover what was the deep-rooted issues that have affected her in her life and shaped her to be the person she is, and also see just how desperate Poppy was to conceive even if it meant damaging her own relationship with husband Alistair.

This is a story that I feel will resonate with many as it tackles something that is still very much a taboo subject in today's society and introduces us to three very different women, their lives and reasons why they want to be a part of this club.  I'm sure we all know someone like Clare, Anna and Poppy, whether it's ourselves or someone we know, who have either chosen not to have children or cannot have children.  I know from my own personal experience when I was younger even though I wasn't married or in a relationship I was quite often asked if I'd like to have children as if it was expected of me but yet at the same time no-one knew me or my medical history as to whether I could or couldn't have children...

The No-Kids Club was a real page turner that once I started I wanted to keep on reading to see how it all played out.  A fantastic read that I'd highly recommend.

I'd like to thank Talli for offering me the chance to read this eBook.
